Director General Dr. Margaret Chan Raises WHO's Priority of Disability

Dr. Margaret Chan, World Health Organization Director General, took definitive action on September 22, 2014 when she reorganized two WHO departments to heighten visibility of the agency's priorities to address disability at the same level as non-communicable diseases and injury and violence prevention--diseases and events that lead to temporary or permanent disability and diminished quality of life for children and adults and their families. Dr. Chan's earlier participation and strong comments of support for the program's focus on improving programs for those with or at risk of neurodevelopmental disabilities at this September 9-11 Global Autism Program launch side event of the World Health Organization's SE Asia Regional Conference (SEAR) where Ministers of Health built consensus around the health priorities for the next 20 years.
